Primary Source"Wall of Separation" Letter
http://www.usconstitution.net/jeffwall.html Summary- A small religious sect from Connecticut, the Danbury Baptists, had written a letter to Jefferson complaining that the state rights did not adequately protect their practices. They argued that their worshiping rights were not guaranteed. In this letter, Jefferson replies by stating that nation-wide policies would protect their right to freely worship with no government issues. He explains that church will be independent from state and that people will be able to worship how they want despite what state laws might say. Significance- His adamant argument set a precedent for the future of the country. It created the Establishment Clause, which stated that church and state shall always be separate. This specifically ordained that Congress and the Executive had no authority over the establishment of sects and practice of religious customs. Natalia Zamarripa
Thomas Jefferson on the Monroe Doctrine
https://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/thomas.htm Summmary- Thomas Jefferson is asking a lot of questions in his letter and this is questioning Madison Monroe. Even though Monroe went to seek help from Jefferson and Adams. He talks about Cuba being very intriguing as to admit it into the states. He says he was not interested in politics but is now quite interested in them.He said we will oppose, with all our means, the forcible interposition of any other power, as auxiliary, stipendiary, or under any other form or pretext, and most especially, their transfer to any power by conquest, cession, or acquisition in any other way. This quote was very strong and showing what he will stand up for. Significance- The significance of this piece (letter) was that it was by Thomas Jefferson. It was written to Madison Monroe. Something very important about this piece was that it has a lot of questions almost as if Madison Monroe was being questioned about things (reminder: he is the president). Was an important letter because Monroe actually seeked advice from Thomas Jefferson. Misael Calleja |
